Death & The City

Architectural Design:
Sasan Sahafi
Building Type: Cemetery, Public
Areas: 26,000 m²
Location: Tokyo, Japan
Design Date: 2016
Status: Competition

The project was inspired by many aspects of the Japanese culture, from the identity inscribed onto the gravestone by loved ones, to the shoji dividers and tatami mats which are part of life, and technology, with which the living carve out their future. The building is a vertical garden providing calmness, serenity and privacy within which visitors can leave their own mark and interact with the dearly departed by use of the divided spaces, vertical garden elements and technology. It also provides scalability for the future with its modular aspect and vision for societal change with the advance of technology.
